known as ‘Sutal Lok’ as well. It was the capital of King Bali and also the holy place
where ‘Waman Awtar’ took place. Its past is full of glory as seen from literary, cultural
and social points of view.
Kannauj, the capital of Harsha, always played the leading role in progressing the
principles of secularism and happiness to all. However, on account of several invasions
by Yamans, not only its exaltation was eclipsed but also it lost its identity and remained
only a poor and small Tehsil in the maps.

the district of Farukhabad, but now it is itself an independent district. The Railway

which formerly used to flow alongside the main city. Now its course has shifted towards
Hardoi city by 3.4 Km. In the south east of Kannauj city, another river named ‘Kali Nadi
meets Ganga River to end.
The city of Kannauj stands on ruins. Big mounds are seen here and there in the
city. The whole city is marked by ascents and descents. Looking to its ancient and
glorious history, old monuments are missing today. Of course, many Hindu idols have
been found here which carry their own especialities.
